Billy Wilder

Billy Wilder was born as Samuel Wilder on June 22, 1906 in Sucha near Krakow, today Poland, at that time part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His mother nicknamed him Billie because she had seen the Buffalo Bill Wild West show as a teenager. His family moved to Vienna in 1914 where he lived until 1926. He moved to Berlin, where he worked in the movie business until he fled Germany in 1933. He finally settled in the United states, where he became one of Hollywood's greatest successes with movies like Sunset Boulevard, Witness for the Prosecution, Irma La Douce, Some like it Hot, The Apartment. He died on April 2004 in his home in Beverly Hills.
